I just had an A-ha! moment. I've always wondered how people in movies and TV just pulled a gun apart when they were making sure the bad guys didn't have a working weapon. It always confused me and after shooting guns it sort of just confused me more. I have finally found the answer and all of my shoot 'em up movies make shit tons more sense now.
